Job Description

Giant Cement Company is looking to fill the position of  Environmental, Health & Safety Coordinator at its cement manufacturing facility in Harleyville, South Carolina.  The responsibility of this position is to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental, health and safety regulations and coordinate environmental activities as assigned.  A partial list of job accountabilities is provided below:

  • Monitor, audit, and inspect the Cement Plant, Quarry, Giant Resource Recovery Department and related facilities to ensure compliance with permits and regulations.
  • Coordinate environmental project activities – scheduling, tracking, and planning for environmental audits, data gathering, etc.
  • Review new regulations (federal, state, and local), State Environmental Registers, and other pertinent information for potential environmental impacts to the facility.
  • Review and maintain production, maintenance, and instrumentation documentation.
  • Accompany EPA/State personnel during agency inspections.
  • Prepare cyclic environmental reports required by facility permits and regulations.
  • Safety: Exhibit knowledge of and ensure compliance with all safety regulations.
  • Carry out and maintain the facility’s Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Routinely inspect entire facility for environmental and safety compliance.

Job Requirements


  • Four-year degree in civil/environmental engineering (is strongly preferred); other degrees will be considered.
  • Experience performing environmental work, particularly in an industrial/manufacturing setting preferred, but not required.
  • Effective communication skills; demonstrated organizational and delegation abilities; must be able to successfully interact in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Physical requirements:  Ability to physically inspect plant properties where climbing steps and ladders; physical exertion is required.  Able to use a respirator.
